Wild Roots Homeschool Group

a secular inclusive self-directed learning collaborative

Who We Are

Wild Roots Homeschool Group began their mission in 2021 to create an inclusive, secular, and holistic child-led learning experience for homeschooled children. Our true passion at the time was to create a community that openly supported marginalized groups. Celebrating the variety of backgrounds and beautifully eclectic array of life and learning styles of our members is at the heart of what we do. We believe that by providing a safe, inclusive environment, children can find themselves and truly celebrate who they are allowing the rest to fall beautifully into place.

What We Are

Self-Directed

Self-directed learning allows our members to steer their learning journey exactly where their interests and curiosity lead. One of the biggest perks? Development of critical life skills such as self-discipline, problem-solving, and the ability to seek out and evaluate information effectively and fosters a lifelong love for learning. It turns the process into an adventure, not a chore.

Nature Based

Nature-based learning isn’t just a breath of fresh air—it’s a full-on gust of brain-boosting, mood-enhancing, and skill-sharpening goodness! Ditching the traditional classroom for the great outdoors, students experience a hands-on, dirt-under-the-fingernails kind of education. It’s where textbooks meet the tactile, and lessons are learned not just through reading and writing, but by doing and exploring.

Strong Community

Building a strong homeschool community isn’t just about having a group to swap books with or a reason to get out of the house. It’s about creating a vibrant, supportive network that enriches the homeschooling experience for both parents and children. We provide a plethora of opportunities for members to interact, engage, and form friendships with peers who have diverse interests and backgrounds. Additionally, community service projects and volunteer opportunities give our members a chance to engage and enrich learning and deepen their sense of belonging.

What We Offer

We cultivate spaces for members to connect, learn, and grow alongside one another. As a self-directed collaborative, we honor the unique paths of each individual, inviting participation in ways that feel meaningful and authentic. While nothing is ever required, we deeply value the voices and interests of our members and encourage them to help shape our shared offerings through open planning and dialogue.

It is through our members sharing their diverse and unique interests that we all grow and learn together!

Offerings

Wildlings

The heart of our program, and where it all started, Wildlings meet each Wednesday morning to explore nature, share ideas, build relationships, and foster a sense of community and growth.

We meet in all weather and foster the idea of embracing the change and challenges that come.

Electives

Our electives grow out of the curiosity and creativity of our members. Recent explorations have included Economy, Greek Mythology, Ecological Science, and Cooking Lessons—but the possibilities are endless. If there’s something you’re excited to learn, and you’d like to bring friends along for the journey, we’ll do everything we can to help make it a reality.

Growing Together

At Wild Roots, we believe that children grow best in community. For part of our program, we age-separate our groups so that children can grow, learn, and connect with peers who are in similar stages of development. This allows each child to be challenged in ways that are meaningful, supported in ways that meet their needs, and celebrated for who they are right now. Each stage of our program is designed to nurture connection, confidence, and compassion, while giving young people space to explore who they are becoming.

Foxes
For ages 5–9, our Foxes learn through imagination, play, and teamwork. They explore challenges side by side, discovering resilience, problem-solving skills, and the joy of building lasting friendships.

Koalas
Our Kindness, Outreach, and Leadership Association (K.O.A.L.A.s) is for middle schoolers, ages 10–14. This group is a safe and supportive place for preteens to stretch into new roles of responsibility. Together they practice leadership, engage in service, and strengthen the friendships that help them thrive during these formative years.

Panthers
The Panthers, our high school program for ages 14 and up, empowers teens through community, leadership, and real-world experiences. From volunteer projects to team initiatives, teens strengthen their social skills and prepare for life beyond high school while staying rooted in their homeschool community.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

We believe some of the most powerful lessons happen when learning is lived. Our field trips and volunteer opportunities invite members to step into the wider community, connecting knowledge with real-world experiences. Whether exploring local history, engaging with nature, or serving alongside community partners, these hands-on opportunities deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and nurture a sense of responsibility to the world around us.

Please note: Field trips may involve additional costs.
